Colombus was the proud owner of a new stadium, and a new team, whose logo and title were both inspired by Ohio’s Civil War history. The Blue Jackets hit the ice in 2000, losing their initial match against the Chicago Blackhawcks.
To help energize fans, the franchise used a reproduction of a late 19th century cannon in the arena, firing it whenever the team its the ice at the start of a game, score a goal or win the match.
The name Blue Jackets was chosen to celebrate patriotism, pride, and the rich Civil War history in the state of Ohio, and city of Colombus.
